The night is yours — and it matters every shift.
When the day team signs out, you run the cardiothoracic service. You are managing post-operative cardiac and thoracic patients on the ward and in the ICU, responding to changes in status, and keeping the service steady until morning. You are never alone — the cardiac surgeon and intensivist are 100% available by phone, and in person whenever a situation calls for it. It is the autonomy experienced APPs want, backed by the resources that make the work safe and rewarding.
Where you will practice
Intensive care unit
Manage 3–6 critical post-op cardiac patients overnight
Inpatient ward
Care for 10–15 cardiothoracic inpatients each night
Physician backup
24/7 surgeon + intensivist by phone, in person as needed

Shifts per month — two weeks on, two weeks off
Nights, 7:00 PM to 7:00 AM. Fourteen shifts a month means half the month is yours. At $1,000 per shift or $168,000 annually with full benefits, your time is valued at every level.
What you will do
- ❤️Run the cardiothoracic surgery service overnight across the ward and ICU
- 🩺Assess, monitor, and manage post-operative cardiac and thoracic surgical patients
- ⚕️Respond to changes in status, order and interpret diagnostics, and adjust plans in real time
- ☎️Partner by phone with the cardiac surgeon and intensivist, escalating in person when it counts
- 👥Collaborate with bedside nursing, respiratory therapy, and ancillary teams
- ↔Deliver clear, thorough hand-offs to the day team each morning
What you bring
Qualifications
- ✓Graduate of an accredited Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant program
- 🪪Current or eligible South Dakota NP or PA license
- ✓National NP certification or NCCPA certification (PA)
- ❤️ICU or cardiac experience required
- 🛡️BLS and ACLS certification
- ★Cardiothoracic surgery or critical care background strongly preferred
- ★Comfort working autonomously on nights with physician backup preferred
